Emma Gonzalez, 74: A loving Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Godmother, Missionary, Nurse (Neonatal), Educator and Friend who always thought of others before herself, was called to be with the Lord on May 23, 2018.
To her family, Emma was an example of Christ-like humility and service. She volunteered her time by playing numerous musical instruments and creating children’s holiday productions at church. She cared for homeless individuals and had a passion for rescuing animals.
Our beloved Emma began a 44-year career in healthcare at Laredo Medical Center (formerly Mercy Hospital) in 1973. She attained several nursing certifications and received a BSN from University of the Incarnate Word. She worked in the ICU and Education Department, but her heart was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where she cared for thousands of babies. She was loved by all and held in high esteem by her coworkers.
Throughout her distinguished career, Emma was recognized as an exemplary nurse. She received the People’s Choice Award and recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Lifetime Member in Nursing. She was also awarded membership of the International Nurses Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Anastacio & Aurora Gonzalez and siblings: Anastacio Gonzalez Jr., Antonio Gonzalez & Marie (Frederick Jr.) Hyman.
Left to cherish her memory is her brother, Manuel (Elva) Gonzalez, nephews & nieces: Frederick Hyman III, Gary Hyman, Robert Gonzalez & Belinda (Luis) Elizondo, half-nieces & nephews: Senaida Gonzalez, Arnulfo Gonzalez, Anastacio Gonzalez, Antonio Gonzalez & Genaro Gonzalez. Emma is also survived by her extended family which include her God-daughter, Rebecca (Rick) Lopez, Godson, Steven (Elsa) Canales, David (Patty) Canales, and her beloved "grandchildren:" Alyssa (Robert) Cardenas & Brianna and Jenapher Canales, Christopher, Katie & Matthew Lopez, Carlo, Karina, Angie & Lianna Canales, and Dolores Canales.
