Funeral Service Vs. Memorial Service: What’s the Difference?

You may have heard of or even attended a traditional funeral service, especially since it is widely used in many cultures around the world. So, you may already know what happens during such type of celebration. But as the popularity of cremation continues to rise, many people are opting for a memorial service. The question now is, what’s the difference between them?

But before learning about the differences between memorial and funeral services, it would be best to understand their similarities first. Both services serve the same purpose: to give you the chance to say goodbye to your departed loved one properly. Both can also include religious elements, readings, songs, prayers, reflection, and a eulogy.

Funeral Service

The biggest difference between a memorial and funeral service is that the deceased’s body is present during the latter. This is why the celebration needs to be done as soon as possible.

Compared to a memorial celebration, a traditional funeral service is said to be more formal and structured. This means that it always has a beginning (visitation), a middle (funeral service), and an ending (committal service and reception). It is also often led by a member of the clergy, as such type of celebration is frequently associated with religion.

Memorial Service

As stated above, the body of the deceased isn’t present during a memorial celebration. However, the urn that contains the cremains of your departed loved one can be displayed. The service can also be held days, months, or even years after the death. This means you’ll have more time to plan the perfect celebration for your friend or family member who passed away.

Unlike a traditional funeral service, a memorial celebration doesn’t follow a specific structure. It can even be personalized to make it more memorable or meaningful. The service can also be led by a celebrant or master of ceremonies. It can even be held anywhere that’s special to you or your departed loved one.
